Bill Bruty

A professional fundraiser since 1984, Bill Bruty has worked for three national charities in senior management roles – Scope (1984-88), BTCV, formerly British Trust for Conservation Volunteers, (1988-97) and Children’s Aid Direct (1997-8).

Under his management, BTCV’s voluntary income increased from £400,000 to £1.6 million. He has helped to develop training courses in fundraising from trusts and companies for the Directory of Social Change and lectured for the Open University Business School in the Voluntary Sector Programme from 1998 until 2000.

Bright Ideas Partnership – Joanne Ryan

The Bright Ideas Partnership specialises in supporting and advising charities to raise funds efficiently and cost effectively, helping them to achieve sustainable development in the long-term.

The work that we undertake for each charity is tailored to its individual needs. We specialise in producing fundraising strategies for small to medium charities, submitting funding applications on behalf of charities to raise funds to support their operational costs, and mentoring. We also provide advice and bright ideas where needed.

We also take an holistic approach to the support we provide to charities, and are able to link charities up with experienced professionals to provide support in areas such as IT and Press and PR, where necessary.

Charlotte Simpson

Charlotte has worked as a grants fundraiser since 1998. She has worked for national charities in the fields of disability, HIV/AIDS and social care. During her most recent post at Turning Point, Charlotte won grants of up to £1 million from the Big Lottery Fund, charitable trusts and central Government departments.

Charlotte has expertise in project development, funder research, partnership working and line management as well as bid-writing and grant management.

Ed Dean

Ed Dean has ten years fundraising experience for small, medium and large NGOs. Until July 2007 Ed was Head of Fundraising for the London Wildlife Trust, where he implemented a successful programme of applications to funders such as the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Big Lottery Fund and City Bridge Trust. Ed also helped his team to double income from companies and worked with a range of stakeholders to devise and began the implementation of a strategy to increase income from individual supporters and members. As both a fundraiser and senior manager at London Wildlife Trust, Ed made a significant contribution to delivering the organisations strategic objectives.

Prior to the London Wildlife Trust, Ed was Head of Fundraising for the Family Welfare Association, where he increased support from trusts and foundations, implemented a major donor programme and secured new corporate partnerships.

Helen North

Helen North

Helen has been a professional fundraiser since 1990 taking management positions with national and regional social care charities. During this time she gained experience in direct marketing, community fundraising, legacies, trusts and grants and was an early recipient of the Certificate in Fundraising Management.

Since becoming a consultant in 1999, she has worked with numerous charities both large and small over a number of years, including Catholic Children’s Society, the Peace Hospice, Swings & Smiles and Transform Africa. She also worked as Head of Fundraising and Development for 3 years at Wavemakers. This consultancy work has included extensive successful trust and grant research and applications, project development, and strategic business and budget planning.

Joanna Matthews

Joanna has worked as a fundraiser since 1988 for both local and national charities, and for charities with large and small fundraising incomes. From 1996 to 2006 Joanna was Director of Fundraising for YWCA England and Wales, and prior to that RNIB’s Manager of Trusts and Lottery Fundraising. Joanna is now developing a career in supporting NGOs develop their fundraising function as well as mentoring individual fundraisers. Her current clients include the Salvation Army. She is also a trustee of 2 local charities.

Joanna has experience of hands on fundraising in trusts, lottery, statutory, direct marketing and face-to-face, as well as strategically managing large budgets and departments. Her role at YWCA included being part of the senior team, reporting to trustees and securing investment in new fundraising initiatives as well as taking joint responsibility for the overall business plan for the charity. This latter task included repositioning the YWCA.

John Lane

John was a charity chief executive or professional fundraiser for 30 years, now providing consultancy services. His working experience includes large national and regional charities and small local charities, including the YWCA, St Mungo’s, Turning Point, Victim Support, National Association for the Blind, and the Peckham Settlement

John’s fund-raising successes include increasing income by a factor of 5 in three years, a major capital appeal of £7m, and, by instituting a five year strategy grew a regular in come of over £1m starting from a nil base

As a chief executive he enjoyed working with weak organisations, seeking to institute changes that would provide a firm base for future development. At St Mungo’s he inherited an organisation with 3 buildings and a turnover of £250.000 and left it with 60 buildings, a range of employment and resettlement services and a turnover of £40m.

John’s preference is for strategy, enjoying helping organisations construct an overall plan or a fund-raising strategy, and providing continuing support if necessary.

Sarah Tennant

Sarah Tennant

With ten years’ experience in both the corporate and not-for-profit sectors, Sarah now provides consultancy services to charities on a freelance basis.

Whilst in the private sector, Sarah managed the online sales division of a leading publishing company. She gained valuable sales, marketing and management experience, negotiating national and global contracts with academic libraries and pharmaceutical companies throughout the world.

Since moving to the not-for-profit sector, Sarah has worked in trust fundraising roles for NCH, Save the Children and the British Association for Adoption & Fostering (BAAF). She has successfully bid for funds from a wide variety of trusts and organisations, including the Big Lottery Fund, The Freemasons’ Grand Charity and the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation.

Sarah now specialises in grant-seeking from trusts, statutory funding applications and business development. As well as writing, she particularly enjoys establishing and developing teams and improving internal business processes. Her current clients include the international department of Leonard Cheshire Disability and BAAF.
