Every Linking Organisation for the Alliance needs a robust resource mobilisation plan in order to remain an accredited partner with the Alliance. Since 2014 we have been working with the Alliance’s Linking Organisations across Africa – guiding them in resource mobilisation strategies. This has involved a series of in-country workshops, backed up with online mentoring. So far, this has included partners in: Ethiopia, Senegal, Nigeria, Botswana, Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda.
I worked closely with Bill Bruty of FTL on one Linking Organisation’s Resource Mobilisation (RM) plan in 2015 and subsequently recommended his services to other colleagues and clients. I was impressed by his ability to do this (often dry, dusty and highly technical) work in an engaging, participatory and enjoyable way while also posing challenging questions and getting to the bottom of some sticky issues.
He met the client where they were and found a way of generating considerable interest and enthusiasm. Bill is an excellent trainer and facilitator as well as being very practical and knowledgeable in his field.
Tangentially, his intervention helped us to get to the bottom of some non-Resource Mobilisation issues that were keeping the organisation stuck – and this in turn opened up the opportunity for making some other important organisational changes in the areas of culture, practice, strategy and systems.
What I liked most about his approach is that it is not just about the money but about the whole organisation – its purpose, strategy, values, brand identity and culture. I learned a great deal about both resource mobilisation and the value of this area in relation to my own field (organisation development).
Working with Bill on RM issues is not just about making a plan or solving a problem – it is also an opportunity to strengthen your organisation’s knowledge and skills in this area and to build a coherent system that greatly increases the chances of sustaining your work in these challenging times. I would recommend hum unreservedly – if you are serious about making your fundraising work and your organisation as a whole more effective and efficient.
